The big fifth grade project is a state report and, to top it all off, a coordinating state float. Yes...these little 10-year olds were making miniature floats that needed to be pulled along on wheels of some sort and have their state outlined on it and have some amount of height. The first part of the challenge was to figure the wheeled base of the float. Some with handy parents had custom made rigs. Others used wagons, skateboards or carts; I even saw one with a wooden toy train as the base. We opted to purchase a red flyer wagon for this endeavor seeing that we had two more children that would eventually do the same project. The little engineers needed to make sure their floats could withstand the parade route. This year there was some wind so their floats were challenged a bit as they were making their way around the school grounds. All of the school turned out to watch the entertaining parade of states. Each of the kids had also decorated their own shirts with the state that they were representing. Nay's state for this project was Rhode Island.
