Mourning the Loss of a Tree

My boys have a difficult time parting with things. And I don't mean just their toys. A few years back they were sad to see our old top loading washer go and be replaced by a front-loading water saving washer. However, a few months later, they quipped how much they enjoyed the new washer. This year they have had to mourn the loss of our silk tree that adorned the front of our home. The tree had simply outgrown its space and thus was not thriving as it had in the past. It was a sad moment for them to see the tree removal. They were able to save a memento of a few leaves that are now being dried in between the pages of our phone book. A new red maple planted elsewhere in front of home has not yet consoled them. Perhaps in a few years when the tree has grown and they enjoy the change of leaf colors that they'll quip how much they enjoy the new tree. Isn't that how it is in life? We don't like change and yet, in retrospect, change is simply what was needed.
